“Water is very precious,” said Rui Guo. “My research has great potential, it just needs to be more practical.”

Her research, along with a team at the U of S, has created a powder-like substance that looks similar to salt. When put in water, it expands up to 2000 times its size to soak up industrial, agricultural or pharmaceutical byproducts.

“You could think of it as a very selective kind of water filtration device, said Lee Wilson, associate professor of chemistry at the University of Saskatchewan.

This absorbent powder could help remove harmful materials from rivers and oceans if put inside a filter.

“Probably some kind of plastic cartridge that you could flow water through,” Wilson said.

The product is made from naturally-occuring materials, an initiative Guo calls “green chemistry,” including a substance derived from crab and lobster shells.

“Literally, hundreds of thousands of tonnes of this stuff is thrown away as a waste byproduct every year. We see
Read More Here: http://cjme.com/story/u-s-phd-student-invents-product-clean-water/108934

Melbourne based Water Equipment Plus has been appointed as the Australasian distributor of the Aqualine range of high flow rate filtration systems.

These systems offer a high flow rate solution with quick changes to the cartridge filters to deliver advanced water filtration systems including industrial and commercial osmosis type water or sea water filtration and treatment systems.

Developed internationally by Pentair Water, the Aqualine range offers corrosion resistant FRP (fibre reinforced plastic) cylindrical pressure vessels that are compliant to the relevant international quality standards (including ASME Sec. X).

For sea water installations a super duplex system is also available for a longer installed life. The filtration medium the Aqualine cartridges are manufactured from polypropylene with a PVC core.

They are absolute rated achieving 99.98% efficiency at the stated micron size. A unique feature is the tool-less closure system which unlike other multi-round filtration vessels does not require special tools or fasteners
Read More Here: http://www.pacetoday.com.au/news/water-equipment-plus-to-distribute-aqualine-range

Inspired by the traditional Indian practice of storing drinking water in copper pots, a team from the Institute of Ayurveda and Integrative Medicine (IAIM), Bangalore, has developed a low-cost, portable purifier. It is to be tested in the country soon.

The device, a copper based coil, standardised to act against water-borne pathogens that cause cholera and typhoid, has been laboratory-tested by Padma Venkat and her team.

The point-of-use device has been designed for providing pathogen-free water to poor households in India and Kenya. Expected to cost about Rs. 500, it will last a lifetime, says Dr. Venkat.

“It is safe, easy-to-use and requires no electricity to function, and no cartridges to recharge.” says Dr. Venkat, adding the device is aimed at sections which cannot afford a regular filter or frequent maintenance cost.

A proposal to test the device has won a $100,000(Cdn)-grant from Grand Challenges Canada (GCC), an organisation funded by the Government of Canada. The proposal was submitted to GCC by three students of McGill University’s International Masters for Health Leadership (IMHL) programme, including Dr. Venkat.

An inexpensive water-filter that can kill microbes and virus besides screening out toxic heavy metals may soon be a reality, thanks to a group of researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology-Madras.

The water purifier is based on composite nano-materials that not only destroy bacteria and viruses but also scavenge toxic chemical contaminants, such as lead, iron and arsenic.

The laboratory prototype uses 120 gm of filtering material, which is enough to produce 3,600 litres of completely clean drinking water. Assuming daily use of 10 litres of drinking water, the filter is good enough for an entire year for the family.

“Going by our estimates, the filter will cost Rs 500 whereas the cost of the cartridge will be Rs 150. The actual pricing will also depend on the scale of production,” said T Pradeep, a professor of Chemistry at the IIT who led the team that created the filter. The cartridge’s life can also be extended by boiling the filter in plain water or rubbing it with lemon juice, commonly available in households.

Cost-wise it is comparable to a popular
Read More Here: http://www.deccanherald.com/content/330804/iit-students-develop-low-cost.html

The majority of these power plants are of the ultrasupercritical design. These power plants need the highest purity boiler feedwater. Contrary to public perception, the Chinese fleet is operating more efficiently than the U.S. counterpart, says the McIlvaine report. The reason being that most of the Chinese plants have been built since 2000. By contrast, the average coal-fired power plant in the U.S. is more than forty years old. Asia has been quick to embrace newer technologies such as electrodeionisation (EDI) as a substitute for ion exchange.
Asia is also proceeding with nuclear power plants. These power plants require the highest quality water. Combined cycle gas turbine plants also require high quality water but their needs per megawatt are less than half of that of a coal-fired power plant.
Over 50 percent of the market is attributable to the electronics and flat panel segment. Asia has more electronics
Read More Here: http://www.filtsep.com/view/32277/asian-ultrapure-water-sales-to-exceed-3-billion-in-2015/
